Fabulously entertaining, this exhilarating Gala event is a must to experience for opera lovers and opera novices alike.

Presented on a balmy August night – in the middle of winter when it is freezing everywhere else! - just a stone’s throw from Broome’s spectacular Cable Beach, OPERA UNDER THE STARS® is renowned for its artistic excellence, uniquely intimate feel and spine-tingling pleasure value.

Now in its 18th year the sensational, star cast of Australian and international artists for this year’s 18th Award Winning OPERA UNDER THE STARS® Gala will take your breath away with their fabulously entertaining performances.

The spectacular all star line-up for 2010 includes Soprano, Antoinette Halloran - in her first professional performance in Western Australia - Lyric Tenor, Aldo Di Toro, Heldentenor, Stuart Skelton; Baritone, James Clayton and Pianist, Kate Johnson who will perform together in Broome for...

One Night Only on Saturday 28th August at OPERA UNDER THE STARS® 2010

OPERA UNDER THE STARS® 2010 will feature a sublime programme of music highlighting repertoire for both the Lyric Tenor and Heldentenor voices including gems such as “Cielo e Mare” from La Gioconda by Ponchielli and “Winterstürme wichen dem wonnemond” from Wagner’s Die Walküre. Also featuring will be the moving final scene from Act I of Puccini’s La Bohème; the divinely inspired duet “Au fond du temple saint” from Les Pêcheurs de Perles by Bizet and the rousing tenor aria “Nessun dorma” from Puccini’s Turandot.

With the idea of increasing Patrons’ enjoyment and enhancing the community spirit of OPERA UNDER THE STARS®, the Town Bus Service will be providing a special bus service from the Cable Beach Amphitheatre AFTER the performance, this service will take the usual bus route through Cable Beach and then on to Old Broome and Chinatown. Soprano

Antoinette Halloran is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts and has an Honours Degree in Music from the University of Melbourne. Since graduating, Antoinette has appeared in many productions ranging from opera to musical theatre and cabaret. Music theatre highlights include roles in The Phantom of the Opera, A Little Night Music, Masterclass, Forbidden Broadway, The Merry Widow and The Opera Burlesque.

For Oz Opera she has performed Mimi in La Bohème and the title role in The Ghost Wife at the Barbican in London. For Chamber Made Opera, she has performed roles in Motherland of the Foreign Son and Matricide - the Musical.

In 2005 Antoinette was the winner of the Acclaim Awards (Australian Puccini Foundation) which enabled her to study and perform the roles of Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly and Prima Ancella in Turandot at the prestigious Torre Del Lago, Italy.

Tenor

Aldo Di Toro graduated from the Western Australian Conservatorium of Music and made his debut in opera as Oronte in Alcina for West Australian Opera at the Festival of Perth. Aldo has won two awards from Opera Foundation Australia: the 2000 Italian Opera Award which enabled him to study at Teatro Comunale di Bologna and the 2002 AIMS Award for further study at Graz, Austria.

Now living in Italy and performing internationally, last year Aldo sang the title role in Werther in Sydney and Tebaldo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi in the Melbourne and Sydney seasons for Opera Australia, Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto in Innsbruck and Rodolfo in La bohème for Opera Holland Park, London.

His 2010 engagements include Alfredo in La traviata for Opera Australia and Elvino in La Sonnambula for Opera Australia and West Australian Opera as well as Rodolfo in La bohème for Opera North in the United Kingdom.

Stuart Skelton, who was awarded the inaugural Lauritz Melchior Prize for best Heldentenor on recording, has been recognised as one of the finest heroic tenors of his generation.

His repertoire encompasses some of opera’s most challenging roles, from Wagner's Lohengrin, Parsifal, Rienzi, Siegmund and Erik to Strauss’s Kaiser and Bacchus, Janacek’s Laca and Boris Grigoryevich, Saint-Saens’ Samson, Beethoven's Florestan and Britten’s Peter Grimes.

He has been critically acclaimed for his beautiful voice, outstanding musicianship and his intensely dramatic portrayals in performances on the leading concert and operatic stages of the World, including Berlin, Hamburg, London, Madrid, Munich, Paris, Vienna, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Beijing, Shanghai, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Sydney, with Orchestras including the Boston Symphony, L.A Philharmonic, Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Vienna Philharmonic, the Radio Symphonies in Hamburg, Munich and Frankfurt, the Symphony Orchestras of Sydney and Melbourne and with world renowned festivals, the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh Festival.

  Baritone

James Clayton is one the leading singers to emerge from Western Australia in recent years.

Born in Perth, James studied voice and French Horn at Perth Modern School on a music scholarship graduating with distinction. In 2002, he joined the West Australian Opera Chorus, became an Emerging Artist in 2005 and Young Artist in 2006 and 2007.

James’ many roles for West Australian Opera have included Schaunard: La bohème, Papageno: The Magic Flute. Messenger: La Traviata, Second Philistine: Samson et Dalila, Imperial Commisioner: Madama Butterfly, Steersman: Tristan and Isolde, Second Soldier: The Love of the Nightingale, Mars: Orpheus in the Underworld and Marullo: Rigoletto. For Autonomous Productions, he sang Count Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro.

Kate Johnson received First Class Honours in Piano Accompaniment from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. As a recipient of numerous awards including a Churchill Fellowship and a Queen’s Trust grant, she conducted further studies in the United Kingdom, Paris and the U.S.A. Over the years, this continuing research both in Australia and overseas has encompassed song and operatic repertoire and performance, extensive language studies, harpsichord continuo performance, operatic prompting techniques, and a particular interest in French vocal music.

As a Repetiteur with Opera Australia for 12 years, Kate worked as a vocal coach, pianist and prompter, and assisted in the preparation of a wide range of operas with many talented Australian and international artists. She performed harpsichord continuo for much of Opera Australia's Baroque and Classical repertoire, notably Rinaldo with conductor and harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock, and La Clemenza di Tito with conductor Christopher Hogwood. She also performed solo keyboard parts for such works as The Turn of the Screw and Capriccio. As a prompter, Kate worked on a diverse array of operas including Tosca, Don Carlo, La Traviata, Werther, Peter Grimes, and Wozzeck. She was responsible for the preparation of numerous children’s choruses for Die Zauberflöte and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
